14 Days of Weihnachtsmarkt: Day 11

|Bratwurst (Weihnachts Edition)|

Β The truth of it all is that this could have easily been “14 Days of Bratwurst.” The varieties are innumerable at the Weihnachtsmarkt, and the taste is always something special. On Tuesday the 11th, after a day of class when one student said “I don’t even know what literature is anymore,” I was ready for a hearty wurst, even if I would inevitably tear off some of the bread.

Being extra full of holiday spirit, I decided to try something new: the Christmas edition of the bratwurst. I was a little tepid at first, hoping I wasn’t about to ruin a tried and true good food by being excessively adventurous. This fear was mostly aimed at the addition of fruit to sausage, namely plum. In addition to this, the Christmas edition also implemented walnuts and various Christmas spices within the wurst. It was something I wanted to try even if I was scared I would regret it.

I stood at the standing table, staring down at my new friend (pictured above). The townspeople rushed around me, leaving a trail of fading bright lines as if in long exposure. Finally, I took a bite. I did not want to admit it at the time, but the moment I tasted the plum, I knew that I had always been missing it. It was the cranberry sauce with thanksgiving dinner, the bringer of balance to a savory-sided dish. In short, the plum was right at home. The walnuts and spices added yet another layer of complexity to the usually standard sausage, slapping me across the face with an extra note of the holidays. I am still hard-pressed to recommend anything over an original bratwurst, but when something different is needed, the Weihnachts Edition is certainly worthy.
