“I’ll be up-up and away, up-up and away. ‘Cause they gon’ judge me anyway, so, whatever.” Man, Kid Cudi was on one. He knew what he was talking about. Today was the day! Sending Vici off. Woke up dark and early to help get everything in order, then went with her and her mom to the airport. It’s only about a 20-something minute drive from us, but again, Jutta is a saint for stepping up and bringing us. I learned that German has a specific word for traffic jam (“Stau”) and before we knew it, we were at the departures zone of the airport.

If this had been pre-pandemic, I’m sure the goodbyes would have been more emotional, since this will be the first time since moving here that we will be apart for an extended period of time, but given that Vici has waited to get back to America for over three years now, and has seen my unkempt mug every day in the interim, I was but a brief kiss and a hug (her last obstacles, really) on her way to freedom. Unlike Lot who dared look back, and saw his beloved wife transumed into a rocky pillar of salt, or poor Orpheus, whose second glance back into the depths of hell only imprisoned Eurydice for all eternity, Vici did not look back on this day. Into the airport she went, and I hope she has the best time.

Once home, I took a brief nap before work, and pondered what the next month will hold. The last vestiges of winter, hopefully succumbing to the soft sunshine of an early spring.

See you tomorrow.
