…it is in despair that the most burning pleasures occur,
especially when one is all too highly conscious of the
hopelessness of one’s position. – Fyodor Dostoevskyi
Good Morning
It was not long before I found a routine. Brando’s truck was easy to take, and he didn’t mind me being on the island by the time he woke up. I guess it was a new rule we had
established: he never asked, I never told. But make no mistake, we both knew I was living out of the thing. But as long as I picked up the right supplies and was at the first cleaning by 7:30 am, he had no right to be mad. I was getting him good reviews!
“Best pool service in New Jersey! Always here bright and early, always sparkling clean.”
From the richest homeowners in the state, no less. Could I hear it in Brando’s voice that first Saturday of the season, that he wasn’t too thrilled he hadn’t seen the Tahoe in weeks? Yeah. But what could he do, he was soft and he liked me.
